SKINCARE FOR WOMEN OVER 50

I’m 54, I work on TV, I’m constantly on the go and my skin has to deal with a LOT.
Long days. Travel. Makeup. Foundation. Concealer. Mascara. Eyelash glue.
And sometimes, that makeup is sitting on my face for around ten hours.
So my skincare routine in my 50s is less about having a bathroom full of products and more about finding my skin saviours — the products that help my mature skin feel clean, hydrated, comfortable and looked after.
I have dry-to-combination skin, and as a Black woman in my 50s, I’m very aware that my skin is changing.
I’m learning to live with ageing, while doing what I can to preserve my skin, keep it moisturised and maintain that healthy, glowy skin look.
These are some of the products currently making my list
My anti-ageing skin saviours
These are proving great for my skin right now

1. Clarins Velvet Cleansing Milk — My Gentle Cleanser

Every good skincare routine for mature skin starts with cleansing.
My current favourite is Clarins Velvet Cleansing Milk, and I love how gentle and comforting it feels.
It’s beautifully smooth, smells gorgeous — that lush gentle lemony, balmy scent — and I like taking a little time to massage it into my skin rather than rushing the job.
And because I usually wear a TON of makeup for work, cleansing properly is particularly important for me.
When you've had foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara and eye glue on your face for hours, you want that makeup OFF.
I use a damp flannel (like these divinely soft ones from Catherine Lansfield) or a clean towel to help remove everything, and I find it gives me that lovely clean feeling without needing to scrub at my skin.
For me, this is a simple but important part of my morning and evening skincare routine.
My skin-saviour tip
If you have mature, dry or combination skin and prefer a gentle cleanser that feels luxurious without making cleansing feel like hard work, this is definitely one to consider

2. L’Oréal Revitalift Tripeptides Age Correcting Serum
Now onto something new.
I was sent the L’Oréal Revitalift Tripeptides Age Correcting Serum as part of the Revitalift system, and of course I wanted to put it straight onto my face and see how it felt.
The texture is quite viscous — definitely more substantial than a watery serum — so I started with three drops and worked it into my skin.
One thing I’ve learned over the years and I've often tested is that I don't need every product I own to be from the same brand. I’m much more interested in what my skin actually likes.
I also make sure I keep regular facial serums away from the eye area unless they’re specifically designed to be applied near the eyes.
Menopausal skin is a problem for me right now with it getting dry around my nose and cheeks, so I’m interested in anything that helps my skin feel moisturised and comfortable.
Want to give it a go? This is the one I’m putting through its paces as part of my current routine — particularly on those dry areas where my skin is asking for extra moisture.
3. L’Oréal Revitalift Triple Action Age Correcting Day Cream
Next up is the Revitalift Triple Action Age Correcting Day Cream.
First impressions? This is a much thicker, more substantial cream than my usual daytime moisturiser.
My long-time favourite is the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, (complete with added SPF!). This cream is a gel like texture which is considerably lighter than the Revitalift, so I was immediately wondering how this richer texture was going to behave on my combination skin!
I’m not someone who wants to feel like I’m wearing a layer of thick cream on my face all day.
So I applied a small amount, patted it in and then worked it into my skin — and straight to the bathroom mirror for the all-important inspection!
It does leave my skin looking quite shiny initially, and that’s something I always notice. For me, it isn't just about if a cream looks good immediately after application.
I like to consider: Does it actually sink in or just sit on the skin? How does my skin feel later in the day? Does it stay feeling comfortable, or does it feel dry again a few hours down the line?
The answers to those questions are the real test for me.
If you prefer a richer day cream this is one worth looking at, particularly if your mature skin tends to be more dry.

Now we get to the one I was really sceptical about.
The L’Oréal Revitalift Eye Bag Instant Eraser promises visible results in 15 minutes.
I’m 55, I have dark circles and under-eye bags, so of course I was curious.
I applied it under one eye and waited.
And then… I looked in the mirror.
Unfortunately, for me, this was not a win.
As the product dried, it left a white, chalky-looking film around my eye. And when I tried to gently remove it, the product started rolling up into little balls on my skin.
Not exactly the smooth, invisible finish I was hoping for.
And this is where I started wondering: how does a product like this behave across different skin tones, particularly deeper skin tones?
Because what might look like an invisible tightening film on one complexion can look very different on another.
And I saw some Black beauty influencers on TikTok who said they really like this product, so clearly experiences are going to vary.
For me, though? The white residue and pilling were a deal-breaker.
I’m not saying it won’t work for you — skincare is incredibly personal, and there are plenty of people who have had a positive experience with this product. (L'Oreal Paris)
But this is exactly why I think honest beauty testing matters.
So, if you’re curious about the L’Oréal Revitalift Eye Bag Instant Eraser, try it for yourself.

5. My Other Skin Saviours

These aren't necessarily new discoveries, but they’re products I’m already reaching for when my skin needs some extra attention.
At night, I’ve been using Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, and I also use grace & stella new release of their luscious Brightening Vitamin C Under Eye Patches when my under eye skin feels particularly dry.
And that's really where I am with skincare in my 50s.
I'm not trying to look 30.
I'm not trying to fight every line and wrinkle.
I'm learning to live with ageing while taking the best care of my skin that I can.
For me, that means gentle cleansing, hydration, moisturiser, looking after my eyes and finding skincare that works with my dry-to-combination skin.
I’m busy. I’m travelling. I’m working. I’m in and out of makeup chairs.
So I want a simple skincare routine for mature skin that fits into real life.
These are my current skin saviours — the products I'm reaching for when my skin needs a little extra love.
And yes, I'll keep testing them in the bathroom mirror so you don't have to!
